140 or 170 diesel?

Post16 Jun 2010 20:16

Hi everyone, i'm currently looking at buying a 2nd hand scirocco but need help deciding whether to go for the 140 or 170 tdi. I've chatted to a good few people who recommend the 140 due to the dpf in the 170. Is this still the case or can the dpf be overcome?

Assuming dpf is diesel particulate filter you get it on both as far as I know. I have a 170 Scirocco and love it.

Older Mk5 Golf GTtdi 170's (old style PD Diesels) had problems with the DPF's. The Scirocco has newer common rail diesel units and dont suffer DPF issues in either 140 / 170 guise

I've not driven the 140 CR but had the old 140 PD in my last car (a Golf). The 170 CR Scirocco is much quicker, offers smoother acceleration, doesn't need dropping down a gear if you're in 5th/6th and want to accelerate and sounds so much nicer than my colleague's 140 CR Scirocco. I don't think there's a lot in it fuel economy wise either. I ordered not long after the 170 was launched, and it was at the top end of my company car allowance so I considered taking the 140 and getting some dosh back every month. What it came down to in the end was that I knew I'd have been disatisfied with the 140 knowing that I could have had something faster, but that's just me and the way I am.

Sometimes I'm driving the Scirocco, chucking it round corners and accelerating out of them and I find myself laughing with absolute unbridled pleasure; it's so much more fun than my old Golf.

I went from a remapped 140PD A3 to a 170CR Rocco, Rocco felt a lot faster, then I remapped that too!

I've driven the 140CR back to back with the 170CR, go for the 170.

Test drove the 140, then the 170. No contest the 170 is much better, there is only a two mpg difference and the road tax is the same as the 140 there was not much much difference in the insurance either. Go for a 170 and drive with a big smile

The 140 is a great car. If you drive them both you'll want a 170. If you only drive a 140, you'll be happy. If you're bored after a while then re-map it. We've had a 140 in with 180ps (claimed) after a re-map and everyone who drove it preferred it to a 170.

From my dealership the sales split is literally about 50/50. So that doesn't really help.

Re-sale wise, you'll get a bit more for a 170 after a few years but you'll pay more to start so it really comes down to how much power you want! (I guess that's fairly obvious though... :D )

If it were me and my money, i'd go for a 170 then remap that after a while when i'm used to it...... :D :D

Cheers everyone, after reading the comments i think i'll definately go for the 170 and map it up a bit. This is going to be my first diesel so want to keep some performance but have lower running costs. I used to be very anti diesel but have to say some of the newer diesel engines are superb,i had a run in a mkiv golf anniversary diesel which was tuned to 225 bhp and it easily beat my 350z i had at the time returning mpg in the 40s while is was in the low teens.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the 170.
