It will quite happily run on the normal stuff. You will get slightly better mpg and slightly better performance from the premium stuff though.

There is a good video on YT about this, how premium UL claims to increase performance. They took three cars ranging from 130 bhp up to something like 280 bhp, filled them with standard UL then ran them on a machine which measured power output. They then drained the tanks and filled it with with the 'Premium' UL stuff (across different brands such as Shell etc).

After a lot of running the key take out was that the lower your bhp the less increase in bhp you got thanks to the better fuel (the 130 bhp moved to about 132 bhp but the 280 went up to about 310). So really if you are running cars lower down the bhp rating its just not worth it (I suspect a 160 1.4 really wont benefit much) but the more tuned cars did. So rocco wise, unless you are running an R or a tuned 2.0 its really not worth the money.

Also, the brand of fuel made a difference as well. I think from memory Shell came out top. They didnt measure mixing fuels ie alternate refilling of the tank where fuel types mix, but Im sure we can speculate it dilutes the effect considerabley depending on how much standard UL you have in the tank.

Really, I don't think its worth it..! Yet to see any evidence that cars putting in fuel costing 10% more makes it last longer...and the power, well is it worth the extra 3 bhp?

Practically all modern cars (the Scirocco included) have a "knock" sensor in the engine management system. This senses the way the fuel is being burnt and adjusts the ignition to suit the the type of fuel you are useing as well as the loading on the engine.

In everyday driving you will find it hard to notice any difference between 4* or 5* except for in your wallet (purse).

Run on only Shell or BP premium selections, These fuels are great for your car as well as offering improved performance and longevity, Tesco is supposed to give an overall ever so slightly higher performance gain but it also uses alot of nasty cheap detergents to that over time will knacker your engine..

What ever you choose stick to either 4* or 5*, don't keep switching between them. It takes at least a couple of tank fulls for your car to get the benefit of 5* 99octane fuel, both to flush out the 4* and for the engine management system to fully adjust to higher octane. Tests that are run on just the first tank of 5* (even if they do flush out the tank) are not a true test.
Best bet is to run your Scirocco on 4* for a few weeks, once its run in, and note your average mpg on your day to day driving. Then try putting 5* fuel in and then after 2 tank fulls start watching your average mpg on the same day to day driving.
Work out the extra mpg (if any) and see if its worth the extra pennies at the pump.
I reckon I get an extra 3 mpg in town driving with 5* amounting to about 10% extra mpg.
It costs about 5p /litre more than 4* which is about 5% more than 4*.
On that basis 5* is worth the extra. Plus you get a bit more power and if you have a Shell V-Power Club card you get double points when you fill up with 5*.
Of course there are many variables in working out what your average mpg really is but have a go and seen what results you get.

I have been thinking about this too but with diesel. Shell garages have the V Power diesel and was just wondering what sort of effect it would have???

A few years back people used to pour scorn on supermarket fuel but now it seems to get recommended simply as it's fresh. My local Tescos/Asda etc. are by far the cheapest and get more deliveries. I used to buy my fuel from the same brand as that was the brand sold at my local dealer. I soon got bored with that though...... My last car was tuned on the rollers (throttle bodies, cams, ECU etc.) using Optimax so I stuck with that for a while and then went down to 1 in 4 fill ups. TBH, with a standard Scirocco I doubt you'll notice the difference and unless you're planning on keeping the car for 10+ years, are you going to see the results of supermarket fuel "knackering" your engine?
