I bought petrol to the value of £27.12 last on the 8th May, on the 14th May I called VW breakdown assistance as my car failed to start, the mechanic fixed it after 1 hour, he had asked me if I had tampered with the car in any way, I explained to him that I have no mechanical knowledge whatsoever, so if there is any problems I just call VW at the first instance, the VW mechanic told me that after he lifted the back seats up there was water on the fuel pump, this he mopped up & then dried the contacts and then put some Vaseline on those contacts, after that the car started and we were happy, I asked him the cause to this problem and he said that he had not seen this ever before, the VW mechanic stated this could be due to driving over water and seeping in, as it had rained heavily the last couple of days prior. Then on the 18th May the same thing happened again whilst I was out shopping it just cut out, another breakdown guy came from VW he spoke to the previous mechanic, he briefed him on the problem & rectified it a bit quicker, after he had fixed it he told me the car would have to go into VW as this problem was not fully rectified, he escorted me to VW, they took my car in and the breakdown guy dropped me home. The next day I had been told by VW garage that this water has been introduced into the petrol tank as a result of my last fill up, they have stated that this petrol is contaminated and this has been the cause of rendering the car inoperable, they subsequently billed me for £216.00 to empty the fuel tank and clean up which was 2 hours work, they replaced the Fuel pump free of charge

I spoke last to VW Customer Services on the 28th May they said that maybe some injector cleaning substance could have been put into the car to clean the injectors to make the car more fuel efficient, I only ever give the car into VW & they take care of all necessary repairs as my car knowledge is limited, I would have never put anything else into this car other than Petrol from the Fuel stations, I have been told a few accounts as to how the water has gotten into the fuel Tank. VW have told me several reasons how the water has gotten into my fuel tank, firstly driving over water, then filling up at petrol stations that have contaminated petrol, or possibly using some injector cleaning substance, they seem to be more keen on the petrol station theory, stating that over the course of the last 6 months I have used petrol stations with contaminated petrol, and that over this period the water has accumulated!

My Scirocco is silver, DSG, leather interior, I love the car its a great drive, however this problem I have encountered with VW has shaken my confidence. I have already contacted Trading Standards who instructed me to write into VW with this complaint, as a result of this VW are willing to test the petrol sample that I got after the repair & the filter, but I am not sure whether I will get biased report as their previous report blamed me for going to the petrol stations, Is there anybody that can advise me in how to proceed or have had a similar problem.

I have had a couple of occasions over the past 20 yrs when contaminated petrol stops the car, fortunately I have always been able to rectify by filling the car up with good petrol and the water dissipates slowly over time.
The cause afair is due to the petrol station running their tanks to low and picking up the condensation that lives at the bottom of all underground storage containers.

Either way still a PITA.
