Bad fuel economy on 61 Scirocco 2.0 GT Bluemotion TDI

Hi all,

I am desperately in need of some advice. I picked up my new 61 plate Scirocco TDI Bluemotion GT (DSG Auto) the other day. The official guidance is 57.6mpg (or something similar) on a combined run and 47.9 urban driving.

I filled up with £72.55 (whole tank) worth of diesel and have been doing mainly town driving since, and am only averaging 28.7 on the built in computer. The needle has now gone down by just over half in two days. I know the car needs to bed in, but does anyone think there's a problem with it? This is horrendous fuel economy and I may as well have stuck with my old BMW 2.8 petrol had I expected 28mpg.

Is it better to drive in auto mode or tiptronic to save the most fuel?

Any urgent help or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks so much
Stuart

I have heard on Motorways it's sometimes better to knock it over to tiptronic. That way, the car doesn't constantly kick down to give you the power. But I don't do a lot urban driving to tell you the benefit there.

I get somewhere between 47-50mpg out of a tank in my 170TDi (with DSG) as most of my miles are done on the M1.
That mpg seems really low though, someone I work with has the equivalent Golf engine & she has a "lead foot" and get's better mpg than me.

They do take some mileage to get the engine bedded in, and they get better all the time. Your consumption does sound high though, so I'd guess that you do a lot of start stop and short journeys, both of which kill economy.

Try going for a drive on a motorway, stick it in top gear and cruise at 70 for a few miles and have another evaluate.

Well my 61 2.0 Bluemotion TDI Manual gets on average 54 MPG at the moment and i'm not too happy with that - I chickened out at 550 miles the other day as the light was shining brightly at me.

Although I did hit 60mpg the other week on a single trip to my mums - lots of A road driving - I got so excited watching the display i went the wrong way at the roundabout so had to drive an extra 5 miles... doh

General use in my 2.0TSI I barely get 25mpg... though a lot of what I do is City driving.

On a good weekend drive I'll get mid-high 30's when taking it easy... when I put my foot down however, that's a different story.

I regularly get 40mpg in the 2.0TSi, Block changing, rarely allowing the revs to go above 3k and progressively accelerating all help. Mind you, I got about 38 ish on a motorway trip back up north once (about 1 hr 45) then as soon as I hit the cracking A road from the A1 to Northallerton via Thirsk, an S2000 crept up behind me and I just couldn't resist. Won't reveal my speeds but from doing 38mpg ish for 1 hr 45, by the time I'd reached my missuses my average MPG for the journey had dropped to around 20 mpg. Well worth it though.

Back on topic before I get shouted at, Not sure that is good. Sorry I couldn't be any more use.

I am getting 50,4 MPG at this moment , mixed driving ( half in town ) , 1600 miles on the clock and shortish journeys ( up to 8 miles ) , i think if i drive long distances on the motorway i will get about 60 mpg easy .
How many miles has your car done ? it might needs to loosen up a litle bit more .

Well my April 2011 BM now has 4.7k miles on it, and my regular commute to work involves driving around a busy town centre and A roads in the morning (about 14 miles), and Motorway on the way back home (including 15 minutes of static queueing to get on the motoryway), and over a full tank I'm currently averaging approx 50-51mph ish. Which I think is about right.

I know it took my previous Golf about 10-12k miles to fully loosen up and start giving it's best MPG, perhaps the same with the Rocco ?

I know from owning a Golf GT 2.0 TDI before the Rocco (albeit with the PD engine), that the colder weather affected it quite markedly, and I regularly noticed a drop in consumption of about 4-6 mpg compared to Summer. I guess this is because you have lights, heaters, perhaps seat heater, rear demisters etc on, as well as the fact that Diesels take longer to warm up to normal operating temperatures in the winter.

A recent trip from Warrington to near Oxford (about 130 miles), just cruising at 70-75mph, yeilded an average there and back on the 260 miles of 63.5 mpg, so the car is certainly capable of good MPG.

Stuartgraham: To understand how poor your economy is, we need to know your commute. If you do only 3 miles each way in clogged inner-city traffic for your daily commute then I can well believe your mpg. If that is the case you've got some serious issues with DPF clogging waiting to happen unless your car gets a good run out at motorway speeds a few times a week.

With mixed driving in a 140TDI, most people would expect to be 48-50mpg, and even with a heavy right foot, you shouldn't dip under 40mpg.

Even when these are new and tight you should get far more mpg than you are, unless your commute really is a 3 mile tailbacked city crawl.

I have a 2.0 litre GT Bluemotion manual, currently with just over 1700 miles on the clock, nearly all of which is motorway, an I'm averaging about 50 mpg, which to be honest with you, is no more than I expect from a brand new engine! Realistically I expect about 60 mpg once fully bedded in, but maybe your not driving the car as smoothly as you could be because your still getting used to it? Give the car a chance to bed in properly and take it in the kind of roads that allow you to get a decent mpg and see what you get :)
