New idea for "R" LED light conversion

I'm currently waiting on delivery of all the bits to give my car the same front end as the "R". Whilst waiting for this I need to get a converted set of "R" LED light clusters to accomodate an indicator in the same housing, ala the standard car.

I went to collect the "R" version lights today (unfortunately Verve only had one in and the other is on back order - so I need to go back next week) and had a good look at the unit. Basically it only uses 5 LEDs, the light of which is reflected from the back of the unit.

Iluian is currently working on a prototype where the white DRL goes off whilst the indicator is active. When the indicator is switched off the white DRL LEDs in that housing reactivate.

Iluians current design for the R housing has separate white and orange LED strips, but I was thinking that wouldn't it be much better to have the whole indicator housing either be white or orange as needed? If Iulian can adapt the R LED units by simply adding 5 orange LEDs and his control circuitry to make the white LED go out when the indicator is flashing then surely this would be a more attractive solution?

I've emailed him to see what he thinks, but basically this is what I mean. Have a look at the animated picture below and the drawing underneath:

It all depends on how many LEDs he can add in a row. If you look at his version 3 LEDs he uses a row of 2*2 to make it look like the R led.

If you make the housing light up as you suggest then it won't look like LEDs, more like the standard drl but bigger?
His current LEDs work completely differently from the above as they are flat against the front of the clear plastic, wheres the standard "R" running lights don't look like that as they use the reflector. To be honest I think this much better because the light from the current conversion is weak view directly in front. If you look at other cars with DRLs you'll see they are very light from the front and weaker from a side angle. Iulians LED conversion is the opposite. I first noticed this when LCM was behind me on our scottish meet. Looks fine in darker environments but in broad daylight it's not as good.

By going with the above design, this is cured as the reflector is angling the light the proper way.

Got it, in theory it should work then. I remember him saying that he has tuned the LEDs down as they were too bright.

I ordered v3 for myself as they are very similar to the R ones and appear more led than the other versions.

I thought you were one to think things through, not only have u got the mrs to worry about but also the coppers, lol.

Hope it works out.

why would you want the drl to switch off when u active the turn light? i saw the new Porsche cayenne and it has tuning lights in the drl and it doesnt turns off while the turning light is on and it looks ok if u ask me
As there is no other front indicator on the gt version if you remove the existing drl, and as the R has an indicator in main headlight unit it's not an issue.

Would have them facing up next to the original White LEDs. That way the reflector should work the same way as for the white ones.

The main issue with the current modification is that the unit is curved and the LEDs are placed along the front an also follow the curve of the clear face of the unit. In an ideal world these would be angled so that all of them are facing the front. That would mean the LEDs would be stronger when the car is viewed head on, rather from the off-side angle as they are currently. But that would be quite difficult given the way the modification is done presently.

Iulian has emailed me and reckons that he should be able to do it. Just need to get the parts off to him and cross my fingers for a good end result.

Have you just q jumped the order line :)
Lol! Actually I have a cunning plan...

I have a brand new set of standard ones sitting packaged up. As soon as I get the R ones Julian will let me know who to send these ones on to, so it means that someone will get a set shipped within the UK. (makes more sense than me sending them back to Romania just for him to send them back to someone else in the UK). So whoever's next in the queue at that time will actually get a set a bit quicker than normal.

Looking good dude, The flash needs to be quicker though, yes?
x2 was my thoughts, but I presume that is still the work in progress bit?

Just an idea..

You know how when you use the R DRLs, theres a gap left on the edges as it doesnt fit in the bumper correctly.. what if you used the front glass bit from the standard ones and fit that lense that actually does fill the gap on the R DRls?

I've never removed my side lights and taken a good look at them or anything but if its anything like regular headlight covers cant you put them in the oven for a few minutes till the glue gets soft, then remove the lens and replace with your standard side lights lens cover..

I'm not sure if it will damage the LEDs.. etc as they're not removable like the bulbs in the side lights but its just a thought..
